Senegal is located at the western most tip of the African continent, between 12.5° and 16.5° N latitude and 12° and 17° W longitude. This country is bordered to the west by 700 km of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Dakar is a Senegalese city located on the peninsula of Cape Verde, the most westerly Finisterra in West Africa. Senegal’s capital and gateway to Africa located about five hours flight from Europe, Dakar gathers almost all the administrative activities of the country.

Climate
Senegal has a tropical climate generally characterized by the heat and humidity and a rainy season that runs from May to November with strong winds southeast. The dry season that goes from December to April is dominated by a hot and dry wind namely the harmattan that blows with a lot of sand.
Communications
The international dialing code of Senegal is 221. The outgoing code 00 is followed by the country code (for example 0027 for South Africa). There are no city codes. The telephone system is one of the most developed in Africa and many call centers for local and international calls are set up. Three operators provide cellular coverage. Internet cafes provide Internet connections in major cities.
Currency
The official currencyis the CFA Franc of West Africa (XOF), which is divided into 100 centimes. The CFA is fixed against the euro at the rate of 1 euro = 655.957 CFA francs, or 100 CFA francs = 0.152449 euro. ATMs are available in Dakar, but banking services are limited in the rest of the country. Credit cards are only accepted at major tourist establishments, American Express being the most accepted card; the commission is invoiced and travelers checks can be cashed in Dakar.
Credit and debit cards
You can use creditcards to pay for certain items, but their use is usually limited to hostels and large hotels, restaurants, and car rentals. Visa, Mastercard and American Express (Amex) are the most accepted across the country, but the MasterCard can also be used. You can use a credit card for withdrawing money from banks in big cities or in tourist circles. Banks and card issuers often charge exchange rates at the normal rate, making cash withdrawals from ATMs less expensive compared to changing traveler’s checks.

The electric currentis 220 V AC, 50 Hz. Round two-pin plugs are used.
